Amazon — automated staffing software meets human resistance

Amazon is testing software that decides where facility workers should be assigned, with plans to expand across dozens of North American sites and projected savings of hundreds of millions of dollars a year. But floor managers have been overriding and disabling the recommendations. An internal document concludes that optimized recommendations are "necessary but insufficient" — without system-enforced guardrails, manual overrides erode even the best science. It is an early look at the authority-design problem every operation will face as AI moves from suggesting to executing.

Robot foundation models can now pick, place, and sort from natural language instructions — but NVIDIA argues that the more capable they get, the harder rigorous pre-deployment evaluation becomes. Real-world testing is expensive, slow, and hard to reproduce, so the company published its methodology for large-scale simulation-based evaluation on its RoboLab platform. The standardization of an evaluation and verification layer — the evidence base for deployment decisions — is getting underway.

Agility Robotics — a new facility to train Digit in field-like environments

Agility opened a 60,000-square-foot (about 5,600 m²) training facility in Fremont, California. Digit already works in facilities run by Amazon, GXO, Schaeffler, and Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada, with $300 million in contract orders and 100,000 totes moved at a GXO logistics facility. The company keeps its safety stack outside generative AI by design, and the v5 model due this fall will be able to sense and work around humans. More than 30 customers are reportedly in deployment talks.

DHL Supply Chain Malaysia deployed AI-powered inventory drones from Infinium Robotics across four sites. The drones scan inventory autonomously, reconcile it against records, and generate discrepancy reports. One operation cut its cycle count from 84 hours to 6 — a 92% reduction — with 100% count accuracy and 2,000 locations scanned in eight hours; another recorded a 56% productivity gain. The global market for drone systems in logistics facilities is projected to reach $7.2 billion by 2030.

At CeMAT Australia in Melbourne, Hai Robotics gave its double-deep HaiPick Climb ACR system its ANZ debut.
