This week I chose five stories around one question: how much of the decision to let a machine make when it works next to people.

Agility Robotics of the United States unveiled its Digit 5 humanoid on 15 September. It is the company's first model designed to work in the same space as people without safety fencing. AI and multiple sensors detect people nearby, and the robot steers around them, stops or sits down depending on the situation. Lights and sound signal what it will do next, and a safety controller separate from the main control system triggers a response when someone comes too close. It lifts up to about 23kg, 40 per cent more than its predecessor, and reaches about 2.2 metres. Ninety minutes of work needs nine minutes of charging, giving more than 20 hours of operation a day.

What I noted was not the specification but the fact that safety is now settled inside the machine's own control system. The old approach separated people from machines with fencing and constrained the human route by design. Digit 5 moves that line into the machine's judgement. Chief executive Peggy Johnson said the robot was "built to the exact requirements our customers gave us after three years of Digit 4 working on their production floors." Digit 4 has logged more than 65,000 hours at customers including GXO, Schaeffler, Amazon and Toyota's Canadian manufacturing arm.

The supply side has entered mass production. UBTECH of China started up a humanoid plant in Liuzhou, Guangxi, on 12 September with annual capacity of more than 10,000 units. The plant covers 14,000 square metres and is designed to complete one robot every 10 minutes. Several models run down the same line, humanoids themselves handle unloading and material feeding, and collaborative arms drive the more than 2,000 screws each unit requires. The capacity to supply is falling into place.

So where does one start? On 17 September Gartner set out four stages of AI in logistics facilities. The first is more advanced conventional optimisation; the second is generative AI that produces work procedures and exception-handling on the spot. The third is AI agents that recommend or partly execute multi-step work under human supervision, and the fourth is physical AI that actually handles goods. Gartner advises starting with proven applications such as labour forecasting and slotting, and expanding from there.

These four stages correspond to GPIM, the five-stage method GROUND uses to measure the operational maturity of a logistics facility. Gartner's first and second stages map to GPIM Stage 2, Visualisation, and Stage 4, Optimisation; its fourth stage, physical AI, maps to Stage 3, Automation. Only the third stage, AI agents, sits just short of GPIM Stage 5, Autonomy. What matters is the condition Gartner attaches to that third stage: human supervision. The line Digit 5 draws in its safety controller is the same line Gartner asks for in software. People decide how much the machine decides. That is what separates GPIM Stage 4 from Stage 5.

Before the line can be drawn, there has to be somewhere to test. Geekplus of China opened its first European facility of this kind in Düsseldorf on 17 September. More than 150 people attended, including representatives of GXO, DSV and LPP Logistics. Pallet-, tote- and shelf-level transport methods, humanoids and control software can all be compared in one place. Suppliers are beginning to provide somewhere to weigh the options before buying.

Apply this to logistics facilities in Japan. Machines that work 20 hours a day without fencing will be available to buy within a few years. But the more machines there are, the more there is to decide. Machines from different manufacturers, and work done by hand: can one piece of software tell both what order to work in and where to send things? And has someone drawn the line, process by process, on how much the AI decides and where people take over? GROUND's GWES puts that instruction-issuing function and the setting of those limits at the centre of the product, not as something added later. In Japan, where labour shortages are severe and high-variety goods flow through the same building, I believe the precision of that line will show up as a difference in productivity.

Digit 4, the current model, has mostly moved totes and has logged more than 65,000 hours at customers including GXO, Schaeffler, Amazon and Toyota's Canadian manufacturing arm. Digit 5 extends to unloading pallets, tending machines, gathering parts and inspecting items before shipment. Chief executive Peggy Johnson said it was "built to the exact requirements our customers gave us after three years of Digit 4 working on their production floors." Orders stood at more than $300 million as of May, though filings with the US Securities and Exchange Commission show most of that is a single customer contracting for 1,000 robots over three years, subject to milestones. Net sales in 2025 were $1.78 million against an operating loss of $140.2 million, and the auditor issued a going-concern warning. The company is preparing to list through a merger with a special purpose acquisition company at a $2.5 billion valuation. Early access is due in the first half of 2027, general availability by the end of that year.

Gartner sets out four stages of warehouse AI, with agents kept under human supervision

Gartner published an analysis on 17 September setting out four stages of AI in logistics facilities. It names three forces moving AI from experiment into operation: labour shortages that are not going away, capital models that lower the cost of entry, and the growing operational maturity of AI and autonomous technology.

The first stage is more advanced conventional optimisation. Systems move from rules and statistical models to real-time data and more capable algorithms, so that demand forecasting, labour planning, routing and inventory management follow changing conditions. The second is generative AI embedded in operations, producing standard operating procedures, work instructions, exception handling and decision support on the spot. The third is AI agents, which analyse operational data and recommend or partly execute multi-step work while remaining under human supervision, covering task assignment, exception handling and resource allocation. The fourth is physical AI, which picks, packs, sorts and handles goods. Gartner advises beginning with proven applications such as labour forecasting and slotting and expanding from there.

GXO: 127 robots for Guess, designed around the customer rather than installed as standard

GXO, the contract logistics group, has deployed Exotec's Skypod automated storage system at its Venlo site in the Netherlands to automate fulfilment for the fashion brand Guess. The system handles 40,000 to 70,000 pieces a day, with peak throughput of 2,200 order lines an hour. It comprises 127 robots, 60,000 storage locations, eight goods-to-person picking stations and 200 metres of conveyor.

GXO handles inbound, quality control and garment conditioning at the site and ships to stores across Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia, with e-commerce fulfilment for the Benelux market being added. Rather than installing a standard configuration, GXO and Exotec designed around the conditions particular to fashion: high SKU counts, seasonal swings and changing requirements. Exotec did more than supply equipment, bringing storage, picking and transport together on one platform. GXO says the operation has become steadier and its volumes easier to predict since the system went live.

Geekplus opens its first European test facility in Düsseldorf, putting the options side by side

Geekplus of China opened its first European test facility in Düsseldorf on 17 September. More than 150 people attended the opening, including representatives of GXO, DSV and LPP Logistics and the city's first deputy mayor. The company positions it as a hub for Europe, the Middle East and Africa and expects more than 1,000 visitors a year.

Visitors can compare three ways of bringing goods to a worker — by pallet, by tote and by shelf — side by side. The Gino 1 humanoid, the RoboShuttle Hyper shuttle storage system, a robotic-arm picking station and the Brainsupport control software are also on the floor. At the centre is Gravity, the company's AI framework for long-horizon, complex physical tasks. Hong Yu, head of Geekplus EMEA, said that seeing "person-to-automation workflows to humanoid and logistics software" in one place lets customers "move from interest to confident adoption." Rinus Geurts, sales director for Western Europe, said European customers "don't need more promises; they need clarity, confidence and measurable outcomes."

UBTECH starts a humanoid plant building one robot every 10 minutes, 10,000 a year

UBTECH started up a humanoid production plant in Liuzhou, Guangxi, on 12 September. The building covers 14,000 square metres with a height of 13.8 metres, and produces the industrial Walker S series and the Cruzr service series. The line is designed to complete one robot every 10 minutes, with annual capacity of more than 10,000 units. Several models run on the same line, so a change in the production mix does not require major retooling.

The work inside the plant is itself done by machines. Humanoids handle unloading, palletising and material feeding, while collaborative arms and stations that rotate through 360 degrees drive the screws; each unit needs more than 2,000 screws of varying specification. Automated guided vehicles and unmanned forklifts move materials, and finished robots go into automated storage. Every unit carries a serial number, making component sources, assembly parameters and inspection records traceable. UBTECH built the plant with Siemens Digital Industries Software, simulating material flow in a model that reproduces aisles, workstations, storage areas and vehicle routes before any equipment was moved. Production scheduling and operations are run by Yanshee MOM, a management system built on the Siemens platform.
