What Is a Logistics OS?

A Logistics OS (Logistics Operating System) is software that centrally handles the acquisition, analysis, judgment, and instruction of the information needed to operate a logistics facility. Just as a PC's OS integrates and manages hardware and applications, a Logistics OS integrates and manages all of a facility's resources—people, equipment, inventory, and space—and maintains the optimal operating state. In technical classification, it corresponds to an information-type WES.

Whereas a WMS (Warehouse Management System) is an "execution system" that controls individual work instructions, a Logistics OS functions as a "management and decision-making system" that takes an overview of the entire facility and drives optimization and autonomy.

What characterizes the positioning of a Logistics OS is that it does not replace existing systems. The core WMS and ERP, and the WCS and control-type WES that control equipment, all remain in use; the Logistics OS links with them via data, acquiring performance data and returning the results of judgment and optimization as instructions. Because it does not involve a large-scale replacement, it keeps initial investment low and can be deployed without stopping a facility in operation.

The Five Functions a Logistics OS Handles

The functions of a Logistics OS build up in stages on a foundation of data integration: "visibility → analysis and forecasting → optimization → autonomy." Specifically, these are real-time visibility of progress, performance, and inventory; analysis of workload, cost, and productivity; AI-based forecasting of inbound/outbound volume and workload; mathematical optimization of staffing, inventory placement, travel paths, and delivery; and, in the future, autonomy of judgment itself.

Another distinctive feature of a Logistics OS is that on-site managers can use the same platform for daily planning and exception handling, while headquarters and logistics oversight departments use it for cross-facility comparison and trend monitoring across multiple sites.

Why an "OS"?

A wide range of systems and equipment has been introduced into logistics facilities, but each operated independently, with no mechanism to tie the whole together. Now that differences in productivity arise more from "on-site operational judgment" than from the performance of equipment, the presence or absence of a common foundation that supports judgment—that is, an OS—determines a facility's competitiveness. Overseas as well, major logistics facility automation players have made a string of moves to absorb this layer through M&A, and the center of gravity in competition is shifting from standalone equipment toward integrated optimization of operations.
