The Roles of the Three Systems

When discussing logistics facility systems, three terms come up frequently: WMS, WES, and WCS. The names are similar, but their role, scope, and time scale are clearly different. The WMS is operational management that decides "what and how much," the WES is execution optimization that decides "who, in what order, right now," and the WCS is equipment control that handles "how to move it."

There Are Two Types of WES

The WES further divides into the control-type WES (integrated WCS), which integrates and synchronizes control of hardware such as robots and material-handling equipment, and the information-type WES (Logistics OS), which links with the WMS and control-type WES to support facility-wide visibility and analysis, plus judgment, decision-making, and overall optimization. The control-type is an extension of "how to move the equipment," while the information-type handles "how to judge the facility as a whole." For details, see "What Is a WES?"

Where to Start

The core WMS remains the starting point—that does not change. If automation equipment is in place, the WCS (and control-type WES) come attached to that equipment. On top of that, at sites that have entered a stage where operational judgment—"how to distribute people and equipment," "the order of work," "responding to demand swings"—governs productivity, an information-type WES that can be added through data integration without replacing the existing WMS and WCS becomes a high-return option.

Frequently Asked Questions

If I already have a WMS, do I still need a WES?

Because a WMS handles operational management while a WES handles execution optimization, a WMS alone cannot cover the optimization of "who, in what order, right now." The more a site has wide product variety and large demand swings, or the more automated it is, the greater the value of a WES.

What is the difference between a WCS and a WES?

A WCS is a control system that operates individual pieces of equipment, on a time scale of milliseconds to seconds. A WES optimizes execution order and allocation across multiple pieces of equipment, people, and tasks, sitting in a position that ties together multiple WCSs.

Do I need to implement all three?

It depends on the facility's configuration. If there is automation equipment, a WCS is essential, and a WMS is the core of nearly every facility. A WES is not essential, but at sites where productivity differences arise from operational judgment, an information-type WES that can be added while keeping the existing WMS and WCS in place is a strong option.
